My frustrated friend went back to the job.
I have a good friend who quit his job earlier this year. He walked away from a 6 figure income. He entered the world of Entrepreneurs. After 6 months of living life in the Entrepreneurial world he went back to his job because he was broke, a bit unsure and plenty confused.
From the outside looking in most would observe that he is a quitter and doesn’t have what it takes to succeed.
From my perspective he is far from a quitter. Most people would NEVER quit their job to try something new. Most people are scared to death of the unknown or unfamiliar territory. My friend took a RISK that Most and I mean MOST never take and that is why most and I mean MOST will live in the obscurity of mediocrity.
His first go around in the entrepreneur fast track didn’t quite work out as planned. Let me share a few examples of others like my friend who gave it their best only to fail…

Be Like Bill. See how he persisted and achieved. He failed forward. He now has 3 Rings and a record to prove he learned from his failures.
Bill Belichick, head coach of the New England Patriots (3 Time Super Bowl Champions) had his first head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns in the mid 90’s. Within 2 short years they fired him and ran him out of town . The players and the town hated him. Did he learn and grow from his experience? Yep. Did he fail? Yep. But he failed forward and learned from it. Not too many folks know of his ‘losing’ years in Cleveland. Five years later he would take another shot at head coach in the NFL with experience under his belt. Within ten years of his so called ‘failing’ in Cleveland Bill would win his 2nd Super Bowl and then the following year he would win his 3rd. Three Super Bowls in four years. I was part of the first Super Bowl against the Rams in 2001 and it was AWESOME! Yes, it looks like he failed and quit but he just moved up. Bill is an awesome guy too. One of the best coaches I have ever met and an amazing family man.
Pete Carroll was the coach in New England before Bill Belichick entered the scene. Pete Carroll resigned as head coach of the Patriots after a three year career. His record in New England was a dismal losing record. Before becoming the head coach in New England he had been coaching for 20 plus years as a graduate assistant, an assistant and a defensive coordinator. He had been coaching for 20 years. After leaving New England in 1999 he took a break and

Most think Pete just came out of nowhere. He's been coaching for 30 plus years and becoming the winner he is today.
then came back to the college scene at USC. He has the highest percentage of wins among active coaches right now over the past 8 years winning more than 10 games each year with exception of his first year where he went 6-6. Two National Championships, three Heisman Trophy Winners, more 1st Round Draft Picks than any other team in that period. Yes, it looks like he ‘quit’ in the NFL but he simply learned what he is really good at and went after it. He moved up.
Abraham Lincoln and his family were forced out of their home AND He had to work to support them. His mother died. He failed in business. He ran for State legislature and lost. He also lost his job-wanted to go to law school but couldn’t get in. Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt. Ran for state legislature again—won. Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken. Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months. Sought to become speaker of the state legislature – defeated. Sought to become elector – defeated. Ran for Congress

You only fail when you don't try.
–lost. Ran for Congress again – this time he won-went to Washington and did a good job. Ran for re-election to Congress-lost. Sought the job of land officer in his home state-rejected. Ran for Senate of the United States-lost. Sought the Vice Presidential nomination at his party’s national convention – got less than 100 votes. Ran for U.S. Senate again- again he lost. Then he was elected President of the United States.
They interviewed centurions (people in their hundreds) and asked them all types of questions. One of the questions was directed at things they regretted. The mass majority of people interviewed said they didn’t regret at all the things they did. They actually deeply and painfully regretted the things they didn’t do, the risks and chances they didn’t take.
My friend took a bold step into the commission world. It was scary but he did it. Then he quit that job to enter the entrepreneurial world. It didn’t work out as well. He recently went back to his commission job. He is like Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll and Abraham Lincoln and thousands and tens of thousands of others who took that step into the unknown, failed forward and then went at it again. It’s not a matter of IF he will succeed…it’s just a matter of WHEN.

Fail, Fail Often, Fail with Faith and Fail Forward.
If you look at the lives of each of these great successful stories they have many things in common. One of those things is a strong foundation that was built over years and years of doing and failing, doing and failing, doing and failing and then they hit the point where they broke into massive success, wealth and abundance.
“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Michael Jordan
I congratulate my friend who to the casual observer looks a quitter who failed. Quite the opposite, he is on a path that if he continues on with proper coaching and mentoring will bring about results similar to Bill, Pete and good ole Abe…success, wealth and true happiness.
If you think life is about ‘getting by’ you will be like the Centurions who deeply regretted not taking more risks and chances.
If you’re a musician and have been working on your project for a while and you feel like you’ve failed think about Pete Carroll. If you’re a business owner who hasn’t quite got it down and is still only making hundreds of dollars think about Bill Belichick. Both of these coaches appear highly successful and they are. It’s what happened in the years and decades previously that allowed them to be successful. Keep moving forward.
Take action today and start living a life you love. Be like my friend, like Coach Belichick, like Coach Carroll and like honest Abe. Be like Mike. You never know until you try and you only fail if you don’t ever give it a shot.
